What Test Cricket Means to Virat Kohli
For Virat Kohli, Test cricket has always been the pinnacle of the sport. He has repeatedly stated that, despite his many achievements in limited-overs formats and the IPL, nothing compares to the challenge and honor of playing Test cricket. Kohli described Test cricket as “five levels above everything else” and emphasized that it shaped him not just as a cricketer but as a person.
He explained, “Test cricket is the ultimate challenge. If you want to earn respect across the globe, give your heart and soul to it. Performing well in Tests earns you respect worldwide — it’s a badge of honour”. Kohli’s love for the format is evident in his career statistics: 123 Tests, 9,230 runs, 30 centuries, and a legacy as India’s most successful Test captain after leading the team to 40 wins.
Because of Kohli’s drive to succeed and strong willpower, he became a star in Test cricket. Because of his genuine love for Test cricket, others in the game and the fans were lifted. After winning the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he still insisted that his love for Test cricket is unmatched in his heart.
Why Kohli’s Message is Important
Kohli’s statement is especially important during this time in Test cricket. Because of the excitement of T20 and being part of a franchise team, many young cricketers prefer the shorter versions of the game. When Kohli suggests treating Test cricket with respect, he means that the format truly shows what a player is capable of mentally and physically.
He stressed that only after excelling in Test cricket does a player truly earn global respect. “If you perform in Test cricket, you walk around anywhere in the world, people look you in the eye and shake your hand and say, ‘Well done, you played the game well’”. Kohli tells young cricketers to accept the tough moments of Test cricket, as the accolades earned in this form of cricket lead not just to results but to lasting respect and success.
Kohli hopes that passing values and important skills from older to younger players is done ahead of the action in Test cricket. His guidance aims to ensure that Indian cricket remains strong in the longest format, even as legends like him and Rohit Sharma step away.
What Experts Have to Say
Kohli’s opinion has been supported by many cricket experts and stars who have played the game. Matthew Hayden noticed the big role Kohli has played in shaping the Indian test side.
