Will There Be High-Scoring Games | T20 World Cup 2024

ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Pitch Analysis: Will there be high-scoring games in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024?

Before the start of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, there was a lot of hype around how the pitches going to play in the US and Caribbean. Especially in the US, because drop-in pitches will be used in the tournament. A lot of people were expecting slow wickets in the Caribbean, because of the general nature of the surfaces. But no one has any idea of how a cricket pitch will behave in the US. Will it be batting-friendly or bowling-friendly? Or will there be high-scoring matches in the tournament? Today, we will talk about all these things in detail.

Expecting slow wickets in West Indies for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024

If we see the history of cricket pitches in the Caribbean, it tends to get slower and slower as the game progresses. The batters who like the ball to come at them tend to struggle on these types of pitches. They cannot play the shots through the line and need to tinker with their approach in batting.

We have seen many stroke-makers struggle to score at a high strike rate of these types of pitches. Their strike rate goes down because of the nature of the surface.

There are a few grounds in the Caribbean where you see flat pitches as well. But overall, the actual nature of the surfaces is slower, just like in Sri Lanka.

What about the pitches in the US?

A total of 3 venues in the US; Dallas, Florida, and New York have been decided for the games in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Out of the three, two venues (Florida and Dallas) have already hosted a few cricket matches before this tournament. Dallas hosted several games of the Major League Cricket (MLC), a franchise T20 cricket in the US. Florida has even hosted 25 international cricket matches till now.

Still, you cannot judge how the cricket pitches going to play on those two venues, but the teams have a good sample size of analyzing the pitches in Dallas and Florida, as compared to New York.

A mystery of a cricket pitch in New York

As far as New York is concerned, the stadium was just made in a few months. Last year, there was no stadium in that place. So everyone was keeping an eye on how a cricket pitch should be in New York. But whatever little we have seen is not looking good.

A venue hosted a warm-up game between India and Bangladesh, where India scored 182 in the first inning. Bangladesh only managed to score 122 in the 2nd inning.

After the game, Rahul Dravid said India had scored an above-par score on this wicket. An Indian team’s head coach saying 180 is an above-par score says a lot about the pitch. We are used to seeing 200 or 220+ totals being scored and then chased down in T20 cricket, whether it is international or franchise cricket.

Dravid said it’s a ‘spongy pitch’ in Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York.

If you think that’s enough, you better watch the 4th game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 between South Africa and Sri Lanka. The pitch has everything that a pitch for the T20 game shouldn’t have. It has spongy bounce, variable bounce, some balls keeping low and some climbing too high, too-paced, and very tricky to play shots.

SL bundled out for just 77 as the Proteas bowlers exploits the conditions on offer. In reply, SA chased down a target in the end, but their batters struggles too on that wicket. Aiden Markram got the body blow as well, and on a bowler who barely bowls higher than 125. They took 16.2 overs to get over the line.

Franchise cricket vs International cricket

We are used to seeing batters usually dominating things in franchise cricket. Even in T20Is, flat decks didn’t allow the bowlers to get something out of the surfaces. But as soon as the WC comes, it brings a different pressure for the teams. Also, you won’t see local bowlers in international cricket, where you can cash in later.

But, a pitch that we saw in the SA vs SL game was just poor. We always talk about the cricket pitch, where there should be a balance between bat and ball. In IPL 2024, flat wickets and impact player rule went in favor of batters. Here, the bowlers getting too much out of surfaces.

Will there be high-scoring games in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024?

We will see high-scoring games in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. It’s just like we won’t see those things that happen in IPL 2024; teams scoring 250+ and the opposition chasing it down.

Also, it’s just the beginning of the tournament. The teams are coming with a mindset of how T20 cricket has been going over the last few years. As soon as they realize that these pitches are not typical T20 pitches, they will look to change their approach. And the pitch in New York is getting more attention. We have seen big totals being scored in the Caribbean Florida and Dallas. Let’s see how things panned out as the tournament progressed.
