Who is Nikhil Chaudhary? Indian Born Cricketer’s Rise to BBL Star

Nikhil Chaudhary, an Indian born cricketer, has been rising to fame ever since making his Big Bash League (BBL) debut for Hobart Hurricanes. His aggressiveness as a middle-order batter and leg-spinner contributed to some memorable performances for his side.

The 29-year old is indeed the rarest cricketer to make a significant impact in Australia’s prestigious T20 league in the ongoing 2025-26 season.

Despite noteworthy performances, Nikhil went unsold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction. None of the franchises were keen to acquire the uncapped young Indian youngster for his base price of INR 40 lakh.

Short Introduction About Nikhil Chaudhary

Born on May 04, 1996, Nikhil Chaudhary represented Punjab at all levels of domestic cricket (including U-16, U-19, and U-22).

The Delhi-born cricketer played at the senior level as well, showing his prowess as a middle-order batter and handy off-spinner.

It’s noteworthy to mention that Nikhil underwent training under renowned former cricketers like Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh. Unfortunately, his trials at the Mumbai Indians camp were a failure that led to his IPL rejection.

The Tasmanian batter’s career-best knock of 163 runs off 184 balls (including 9 fours and 5 sixes) against New South Wales in first-class cricket highlights his batting prowess at the middle order.

Nikhil’s career took a shocking turn due to the COVID-19 pandemic that forced him to stay back and play for local tournaments in Australia. He was on a tourist visa to Brisbane at that time, and due to unavoidable circumstances, he had to balance his cricket career and part-time jobs.

Despite tough situations, Chaudhary managed to earn a living by working different shifts at a Mexican restaurant.

A Career-Changing Performance in Queensland’s T20 Max

The semi-final match of Queensland’s T20 Max 2023 saw a drastic change in Nikhil Chaudhary’s career. His quickfire knock of 71 runs off 28 balls against Gold Coast (including 7 sixes) grabbed the selectors attention.

Eventually, Nikhil’s impressive performances in domestic cricket caught the attention of a reputed coach, leading to a contract with Hobart Hurricanes for the 2023-24 season.

How BCCI Allowed Nikhil Chaudhary to Play BBL?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) granted a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) to Nikhil Chaudhary before joining the Big Bash League (BBL).

As the young all-rounder obtained Australian citizenship, it remains unknown if he had retired from Indian cricket.

For those unversed with BCCI rules, players cannot participate in foreign leagues until they have declared their retirement from Indian cricket.

Nikhil featured for Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL as well as for Tasmania in Australia’s domestic circuit. Here is what his childhood coach, Charanjit Banghu, had to say about his Australian citizenship:

“Yes! He has been granted citizenship after obtaining an NOC from BCCI. As of now, I am not sure whether his nationality conversion is still in process or if he has been declared.

The previous time I spoke to him was after his 160-plus knock for Tasmania. Also, I called him today, but he hasn’t responded yet. Perhaps, he might call back tomorrow morning to get clarity about this matter,” Banghu said.
