IPL 2025 Mega Auction: All you need to know about the mega auction and the retention rules
The IPL 2025 Mega Auction is set to take place at the end of November 2024 with the retention rules already out. Mega auctions are typically held to refresh all the team squads significantly. In these auctions, most players go back into the auction pool, and teams rebuild their squads almost from scratch. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has already announced the IPL 2025 retention rules and the franchises will have to announce their retention list before October 31.
Today, we will talk about all the things that you need to know about IPL 2025 Mega Auction. We will also see the retention rules and a few more things as well. So let’s start.
IPL 2025 Mega Auction likely to happen in November
The IPL 2025 mega auction might take place in the third or fourth week of November 2024. There is no official confirmation on the dates of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction.
Venue for the event
The Indian Premier League IPL auction (mega or mini) generally happens in India in different cities. Dubai also hosted the recent few editions due to the pandemic and logistics. Now, the BCCI is considering Saudi Arabia as the potential venue for the event. Riyadh and Jeddah have become the preferred locations. There is also consideration for other Middle Eastern cities such as Muscat and Doha.
Even if organizing such an event in the country comes with more costs and logistical challenges, the BCCI is keen to organize the event there.
Why the BCCI wanted to host the mega auction in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia is transforming into a global hub for sporting events, actively positioning itself as a major player on the international sports stage. Through substantial investments in sports like football, golf, boxing, Formula 1, and cricket, the country is drawing top athletes and hosting major tournaments. This strategic emphasis on sports aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader goal to diversify its economy and elevate its global presence.
It also helps in diversifying and popularizing cricket in other parts of the world. The BCCI also considered London as a venue to host the IPL 2025 mega auction. But the venue didn’t make the cut due to cold weather and some other reasons as well.
IPL 2025: Auction Format
The IPL 2025 mega auction will happen in a 2-day format, just like the previous editions. As far as franchises, they will look to make a strong team with a mix of experienced players, star players, and some young blood as well. They will have to consider the retention rules while retaining the players from the last season as well as keeping an eye on their purses. Let us now see some changes in the retention rules.
IPL 2025 retention rules
The franchises are allowed to retain a total of 6 players; either an outright retention or a Right to Match (RTM card). There is no cap on retaining the players on their nationality. The franchises can retain all Indian or all overseas players before the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Out of the 6 retentions allowed, the franchises can retain a maximum of 5 capped players and a maximum of 2 uncapped Indian players.
Salary slab on retained players
There is also a salary slab on the retained players. The franchises have to pay INR 18 crore to the first retained player. Then, the 2nd and 3rd retained players will receive an amount of INR 14 and 11 crore respectively.
Now there comes the interesting part. If the franchises wanted to retain 4th and 5th capped players, they would have to pay INR 18 and 14 crore respectively. The franchises can retain the uncapped player will an amount of INR 4 crore.
A 2-year ban on an overseas player who pulls out at the last moment
The BCCI has also come up with a rule on the overseas players who pulled out of the tournament after getting picked in the auction. We have seen quite a few times that the overseas players pulled out of the tournament due to personal reasons. It will hamper the franchise’s strategy and planning that they make around that player.
Now, if the player pulled out of the tournament without any legitimate medical or injury reasons, they will face a 2-year ban. Also, the issue regarding the injury will be justified by their home board.
There is also a rule on overseas players’ salary and an extra amount in the auction will be with the BCCI. The BCCI will use that extra amount in players’ welfare.
Conclusion
So this is all about the IPL 2025 mega auction and the retention rules. This year’s mega auction will be interesting to see as we can expect some revamp in the teams. The teams have to plan well to make a strong core team group which will help them to win an IPL trophy.
