What Are The Achievements Of The Indian Women’s Cricket Team?

For the Indian public, cricket is a religion, and they are its disciples. I wonder why equated generality with respect is bound to be scored out to it. Though men used to dominate the sport from a very early age, the women’s squad in Indian cricket has evolved much in recent years.

The Indian Women’s Cricket Team was formed during the early 1970s. Still, recently it has started gaining the media spotlight and accolades.

The Indian Women’s Cricket Team has become one of the most successful sports teams in the country, with the success of unseen heights in recent times. This testimony is attributed to tireless efforts put in by the players and support from the BCCI.

In this article, let us look at some of the key achievements of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team and discuss what contributed to the success of the team.

Achievements of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team

1.T20 World Cup 2020 finalist

The Women in Blue reached the final in the T20s for the first time in the 2020 T20 World Cup and lost to Australia by 85 runs in Melbourne. They didn’t win the trophy but surely captured the heart of the whole nation.

2. Two-time ODI World Cup finalist

India is the only team in Asia to feature in the final of the Women’s ODI World Cup; definitely, a record worth its buck. In the 2005 ODI World Cup, the Indian women advanced to the final but lost to Australia by 98 runs.

The second time was in 2017 when they lost to England in the final by nine points. Another surprising result for me is that both tournaments were held abroad: the 2005 World Cup in South Africa and the 2017 World Cup in England.

3. Three-time ODI World Cup semi-finalist

Team India has played the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup thrice. In the 1997, 2000, and 2009 World Cups, it was the first time the Indian team made the semis—and it showed its strength with great vitality. This is among the greatest accomplishments as well.

4. Four-time T20 World Cup semi-finalist

The Indian women’s cricket team has been 1 finalist and 4 semi-finalists in the T20 World Cup. Team India had to exit from the semis in 2009, 2010, 2018, and 2023. The latest example of this is the 2023 World Cup, which took place in South Africa this year, where it had to lose the World Cup after facing defeat against Australia by just 5 runs.

5. Won all Asian Cup titles apart from 2018

This time India won the title defeating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets. It was India’s seventh title win, India had captured the Women’s Asia Cup four times in the ODI format while in T20, Indian women won this title three times, other than the year 2018, India had captured this title every time.

Previous Asia Cup victories for the Indian women’s team came in 2004, 2005–06, 2006, 2008, 2012, and 2016. This team faced defeat in the finals at the hands of Bangladesh only once before—back in 2018.

6. Won gold medal in Asian Games 2023

The Indian women’s cricket team created history at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, by winning their first-ever gold medal. The team beat Sri Lanka in the final by 19 runs, capping off a great tournament.

7. Won silver medal in CWG 2022

The Indian women’s cricket team won the silver at Commonwealth Games 2022 by losing to Australia in the gold medal match by 9 runs. They had a fantastic run the entire tournament, eliminating England in the semi-finals and won every game they played in the group stage.

That silver medal is a witness to all the hard work and focus that this team has invested in.

8. Most wickets in women’s cricket

Jhulan Goswami in her might is a bowling legend, nothing less than a future Hall of Fame inductee. In 2017, the 38-year-old pacer surpassed Australia’s Cathryn Fitzpatrick to stand as the highest ODI wicket-taker ever. She sits on top with 227 wickets.

9. Most runs in women’s cricket

Mithali Raj is the Indian women’s cricketer who holds the record as the highest run-scorer with 10,337 runs for Women in Cricket in all formats. She played 11 Tests with 669 runs and became the highest run-scorer by surpassing Charlotte Edwards. Additionally, Raj scored 2364 runs in 89 T20Is and 7304 runs in 217 ODIs.
