Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli ended the rumors of his test cricket comeback. On Sunday (November 30), the 37-year-old was adjudged the Player of the Match for scoring a brilliant 135-run knock against South Africa.
During the post-match presentation of the first ODI match at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi, Harsha Bhogle indirectly asked Kohli about the possibility of reversing his test cricket retirement. However, the former Indian skipper clarified that he would now dedicate his international career to only one format, which is the One Day Internationals (ODIs).
Kohli’s Decisive Reply to Harsha Bhogle’s Question
On behalf of all fans, experts, and former cricketers, Harsha Bhogle questioned Virat Kohli whether he was committed to playing one format. The right-handed batter gave a straightforward answer, saying:
“Yeah! That is how it is always going to be, as I am currently playing the single format of the game,” Kohli said.
The veteran batter revealed the motivational factor that helps him stay focused and keep moving forward, even after retiring from two formats (Tests and T20Is):
“Certainly! Having played nearly 300 games, you might be aware of your reflexes, conditions, and physical ability to bat longer. As long as you’re timing the ball with perfection, it’s all about the physical fitness and mental stamina that keep you ready and excited,” Virat added.
Main Reason For Virat Kohli’s Test Comeback Rumors
India suffered a 2-0 defeat to South Africa, which was indeed their first-ever whitewash to the visitors at home after 25 years, as well as their second clean sweep loss in a test series on home soil in the past 14 months.
Team India has been going through a lean patch in test cricket under Gautam Gambhir’s coaching. After slipping to the fifth position in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table, rumors spread like wildfire that the BCCI would request the experienced batter into the squad.
Especially, Virat Kohli’s return to form in the Australian tour and his stunning century in the recent game against South Africa ignited hopes among fans to watch their favorite star donning the test jersey again.
Despite India’s sufferings, Kohli was clear with his stance to focus only on ODIs by ensuring not recalling his retirement from test cricket and denying an instant comeback.
Is Kohli Making a Test Cricket Comeback? BCCI Breaks Silence
Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), opened up to end the rumors about Virat Kohli coming out of test retirement:
“No! So far, the reports related to Virat Kohli are just rumors, and there has been no discussion with him about this topic. My suggestion is not to give too much importance to such baseless rumors, as nothing of that kind has happened,” Saikia clarified during his media interaction with AajTak.
‘Early Arrival, Rigorous Preparation’: Kohli’s Success Mantra After Test Retirement
After retiring from tests, Virat Kohli has shifted his focus completely to ODIs. Even at the age of 37, the run machine has still shown his intent to accumulate runs by practicing for three sessions in a day.
Kohli was questioned on why he arrived in Ranchi earlier for extra batting sessions ahead of the first ODI against South Africa. Here is what the ODI’s best batter had to say:
“Yes! Until I feel mentally strong, I can play the game as I have been working hard on my fitness. My prep work was done in such a way that I bat two sessions in daylight and then another session in the evening. This was the main reason why I opted for a day off ahead of the match.
I will arrive at 120% if I am supposed to arrive somewhere to get familiarized with the conditions. Whenever I sense that I am in a good space, I can visualize myself being so sharp and intense to take on the bowlers,” Virat said.
Rumor to Reality: Former England Captain’s Wish
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen responded to the gossip, hoping for the rumor to become reality. The 45-year-old believed that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should be allowed to play test cricket once again, only if they are willing to come out of their retirement.
“See! Typically, I don’t believe the news that I read, either in the media or on social media. The information regarding Rohit and Kohli playing test cricket again is only half true. If such happens, then the duo batters need to take the challenge seriously.
The test cricket survival battle is the hottest topic of debate, and if top stars show their eagerness to play the longest format again, they must get involved,” Pietersen wrote on his social media post.

Overall Verdict
Virat Kohli’s statement ends the rumors of a test cricket comeback. So, it is understood that the King of Cricket wouldn’t start from where he left off. Having amassed 9,230 runs in 123 tests, Kohli fell short of 770 runs to attain the 10,000-run milestone. However, Virat’s recent performance in the Ranchi ODI was a strong reminder to the BCCI that they have lost the most precious gem of Indian cricket, only to rebuild a young squad, but ended up suffering under Gautam Gambhir’s era.
