On Wednesday (October 01), the USA Cricket (USAC) officially filed for bankruptcy ahead of its conflict with American Cricket Enterprises (ACE).
The official cricketing governing body in the United States shook the entire sports world by filing for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
This is the first time any cricket organization recognized by ICC across the world has filed for bankruptcy.
Who Filed a Lawsuit Against USAC?
American Cricket Enterprise (ACE)— an organization that runs the Major League Cricket (MLC) has filed a lawsuit against the USAC. This was because the USAC abruptly ended its long-standing partnership with ACE.
Having worked together since May 2019, the USAC cut off their ties earlier this year, saying ACE didn’t maintain their responsibilities, which include financial support to the national squad and support staff.
However, ACE disagreed with the claims, reasoning that they had paid more than the contractual commitments.
ACE Representative Opens Up About USAC Decision
An ACE representative revealed that the USAC refused to meet expectations in terms of contractual and disciplinary obligations, which include payment for the support staff and the entire national team:
“Yes! The USAC failed to handle the initial hearing and was well aware that the outcome was a forfeited conclusion.
There was no use in canceling the parties’ agreement, and it was harshly threatening the cricket’s success.
Considering the best interests of cricket and players, the USAC had no regard and was purely motivated by politics and the directors,” an ACE representative said.
Which Authority Sanctioned the Move?
So far, the USAC hasn’t mentioned anything related to the timing of the decision or whether it was formally approved by the board.
Meanwhile, sources revealed that all nine directors assembled on September 30 to file a complaint against bankruptcy. This was indeed the second meeting following ICC’s decision to suspend USAC, with the first conference having taken place on September 28 (Sunday).
A week after USAC was suspended by ICC, the nation’s cricket governing body took this sudden decision.
Also, the USAC CEO, Johnathan Atkeison, said that the cash restructuring was purely to resolve the ICC suspension. Although this decision wasn’t made immediately, but was the only solution to resurrect the USA cricket and plan for a successful grouping.
Mainly, the ICC Chairman Jay Shah cautioned USAC not to take any important steps that could either interfere with or go against ICC’s work on the cricket matters in the USA, which includes the LA Olympics in 2028.
Are Players Contracts Under Jeopardy Amidst Bankruptcy?
After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, USA Cricket (USAC) needs to submit all its financial records, which include bank balances, outstanding payments, office assets, and other minor transactions.
However, the worrying sign of concern is that the contracts of local and international players in the USA are now at high risk.
Previously, the ACE had suggested paying player salaries only upon the USAC’s agreement to a court order.
But, USAC not only declined the offer, but also stepped aside even after undergoing the suspension issued by the ICC.
The shocking turn of consequences posed huge uncertainty about players’ future as their contracts are nearing expiration on December 31, 2025. Also, it remains unclear if the players receive full or partial compensation, or if their payments are delayed or need to negotiate for lower amounts.
Now that the USAC has filed for bankruptcy, the case will be transferred from a regular Colorado court to a federal bankruptcy court.
Even though ICC assured that the USAC’s issues wouldn’t have any impact on the players, the sudden bankruptcy filing poses uncertainty for every cricketer’s future in the nation.
USA Participation in the 2026 T20 World Cup and Olympics?
Despite the membership suspension by ICC, there wouldn’t be any negative impact on the team’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 and the Los Angeles Olympics 2028.
Although the suspension leaves a huge mark on USA cricket, the ICC has assured to take the essential steps to protect the long-term interests of the sport as well as continue the player development programs.

Conclusion
USAC’s decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy highlights its seriousness in sorting out the financial crisis to keep a popular sport like cricket alive in its nation.
Currently, the situation is unsettled, and unless the nation’s cricketing body implements the changes and settles the issue, the struggles related to the sport continue to increase across the nation or at the international level. Suppose the ICC’s Normalization Committee and legal reviews department are involved; there is a chance of rebuilding. But a long-term success depends on honest leadership, and clear financial management helps to move forward and preserve the significance of the sport in the nation.
