ODI World Cup 2023 Match No.4 Review: South Africa vs Sri Lanka

South Africa’s huge 428/5 against Sri Lanka in its 2023 World Cup opening match in Delhi beat Australia’s previous record from 2015. The Proteas made history by scoring three 400-plus totals, becoming the first team to do so, and by having three batters record tonnes in a single World Cup inning.

The Proteas were already in the running to shatter the record against an injury-hit Sri Lanka side when Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen pushed them above 200 in just 30 overs during South Africa vs. Sri Lanka match in the ODI World Cup 2023.

Aiden Markram and David Miller joined the party after de Kock and van der Dussen’s double tonnes. South African team easily sailed past 400 before surpassing Australia’s eight-year-old record.

It’s interesting to note that three of the top five ODI World Cup scores were scored in 2015. Also, South Africa, which has now broken the record, has made two of these three scores.

Twin tons from De Kock and Rassie Van De Dussen set the platform

After being asked to bat first in South Africa vs Sri Lanka game, South Africa lost Temba Bavuma in the first 10 balls of their innings before Quinton de Kock (100 in 84 balls) and Rassie van der Dussen (108 in 110) each scored their first World Cup 100s.

Also, they put up 204 runs for the second wicket. It is a record partnership for South Africa versus Sri Lanka in ODIs for any wicket. The partnership went past de Kock and Hashim Amla’s 187 for the first wicket at Chester-le-Street in 2019.

Rassi van der Dussen, Quinton de Kock, and Markram all went to three figures. It marks the first time a side in a Cricket World Cup match scored 3 100s.

South Africa vs Sri Lanka: Aiden Markram scores the fastest-ever ODI World Cup Century

The South African No.4 Aiden Markram broke Kevin O’Brien’s last record for the quickest World Cup hundred by one ball, scoring it in only 49 balls. It took Markram 54 balls to get to 106 runs.

It was South Africa’s third-fastest century in ODIs, after only AB de Villiers’ 31-ball century against the West Indies in Johannesburg in 2015 and Mark Boucher’s 44-ball innings against Zimbabwe in Potchefstroom in 2006.

Having previously witnessed two Proteas batters reach 3 digits, Markram’s stunning century was more retribution for the Sri Lankan team. After a great innings that had three sixes, 14 fours, and a strike rate of 196. Markram was out for 106 from 54 balls.

A spirited fightback from Kusal Mendis & Sri Lanka

The South Africa vs Sri Lanka game was the highest-scoring game ever in an ODI World Cup. Sri Lanka’s valiant effort to reach such a huge score saw them all out for 326 after 44.5 overs.

The 4th game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 was played between South Africa vs Sri Lanka on Saturday in Delhi. Sri Lankan batsman Kusal Mendis put up a brave effort, smashing 76 runs off of South Africa.

Pathum Nissanka was out for a duck in Sri Lanka’s attempt to chase a World Cup-record score of 429. Then Mendis took over and launched a collection of sixes. He was, however, fired by Kagiso Rabada.

Mendis and Kusal Perera combined for 66 runs. However, Mendis was responsible for nearly all of the runs. His 76 had four fours and eight sixes in just 42 balls. Mendis troubled the SA bowlers in a one-man show, finding a way to send the balls past the boundary rope.

Mendis (25 balls) scored the third-fastest fifty for Sri Lanka in the World Cup in the South Africa vs Sri Lanka game, as per Cricbuzz. Dinesh Chandimal (22 balls vs. Australia, Sydney in 2015) and Angelo Mathews (20 balls vs. Scotland, Hobart in 2015) are in the lead. Sri Lanka scored the third-highest total in a World Cup match’s first 10 overs thanks to Mendis’ blitz.

But it was not enough for Sri Lanka to win the game as they were all out for 326. South Africa eventually won the run-fest in Delhi by 102 runs.
