The Pakistan cricket team has now created another drama amidst their uncertainty over the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 participation.
On Saturday (January 31), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) called off a core event related to the tournament.
The abrupt cancellation of the planned event, which includes revealing the national team’s T20 World Cup kit, adds to speculations about Pakistan’s potential withdrawal from the entire tournament.
Had PCB Source Given Any Clarity On This Matter
The closest sources to the PCB reported to Telecom Asia Sport that Pakistan was expected to reveal its T20 World Cup kit officially without giving complete clarity on this issue. This event was scheduled before the commencement of the second T20I clash against Australia in Lahore on January 31.
However, the PCB sources cited ‘unavoidable circumstances’ and declared that the event had been cancelled without giving any clarity on the rescheduling:
“Yeah! It was expected that the Pakistan team’s kit would be unveiled for the forthcoming T20 World Cup. After the toss session of the second T20I match against Australia at the Gaddafi Stadium, there were high expectations. But, the event was called off due to unavoidable circumstances,” the PCB source told.
Heated Debate About Pakistan’s T20 World Cup Participation
Pakistan hasn’t taken any severe step by boycotting its participation in the T20 World Cup 2026. However, the men-in-green are firm with their stance to forfeit their group stage clash against India on Sunday (February 15) in Colombo.
At one stage, it seemed that PCB could take any severe steps by withdrawing completely from the tournament. Being aware of the massive consequences, Pakistan is now likely to play all its matches in the T20 World Cup except against India.
For the unversed, Pakistan was the sole nation to support Bangladesh in relocating its T20 World Cup matches to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns in India.
Within ICC’s specified timeline, Bangladesh failed to confirm its participation without any strong reason. As a consequence, the team got officially replaced by Scotland. This added extra pressure and inspection to Pakistan’s position in the tournament.
Replacement Sattires Become Viral On Social Media
After Pakistan unattended the event, the satires related to their replacement in Group A continued to become viral on social media.
A certain set of fans speculated about the potential comeback of the Bangladesh team, which could fulfill their demands of playing all their group stage matches in Sri Lanka.
While others trolled that Iceland and Uganda could replace Pakistan as they are the non-participating leading contenders in the ICC Men’s T20I rankings.
However, the Pakistan government on Monday (February 02) posted on X that the team would participate in all matches and is keen to boycott its clash against India.
PCB’s Deleted Social Media Post Sparked Speculations
After Bangladesh was replaced with Scotland, Pakistan’s T20 World Cup boycott threat continued to surge day by day.
Moreover, the India-Pakistan political tensions add fuel to the rising speculations. According to the schedule, PCB was supposed to reveal the national team’s T20 World Cup kit on January 31 (Saturday).
At the last moment, the event was cancelled. This led to the debates on whether Pakistan has taken any decision to boycott the T20 World Cup or not.
On Saturday, PCB unintentionally revealed its travel plans to Sri Lanka while explaining why its key pacer was released from the Australian squad as he wasn’t a part of the T20 World Cup plans.
PCB later deleted the social media post, knowing it was mistakenly released. However, the damage was already done. Also, the reports proved that Pakistan would arrive in Colombo on February 02 to play its warm-up game against Ireland scheduled on February 04.
PCB Considering Plan B for Protest: An Indirect Method
Directly withdrawing from the tournament could result in severe consequences. However, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and his men are reported to be considering indirect means to continue with their protest, which includes:
- Boycotting their group stage fixture against India.
- Wearing blackarm bands either on February 15 against India or for other games.

Final Thoughts
Despite Pakistan’s matches in the tournament being hosted at a neutral venue rather than playing in India, PCB continues to express its solidarity with Bangladesh follows the team’s refusal to travel to the hosting nation.
In other words, Pakistan does not even have any security concerns for its matches. Their entire World Cup matches, including the final (if they qualify) was scheduled in Sri Lanka. However, the cricket officials, former cricketers, and experts feel that Pakistan’s intervention was absolutely unnecessary a few days before the tournament. Nevertheless, Pakistan is likely to face heavy penalties if tit boycotts the tournament or forfeit their match against India
