According to a source on Saturday, Hardik Pandya, the newly named captain of the Mumbai Indians, may need more time to heal from an ankle injury he suffered during the 2023 World Cup.
This comes after Indian all-rounder Hardik was dealt by Gujarat Titans (GT) to Mumbai Indians in advance of the IPL 2024 auction. The former GT captain was traded to MI before the IPL auction as part of an all-cash deal, despite being a part of his previous team’s retention list at first.
Hardik Pandya Doubtful For IPL 2024
The five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, quickly announced that all-around player Hardik Pandya had been traded from Gujarat Titans and would take over as captain of the team for the IPL 2024 season, succeeding the veteran Rohit Sharma.
A source verified on Saturday, as reported by NDTV, that Hardik will miss the next T20I series against Afghanistan; furthermore, it is unlikely that he will play in the following IPL 2024.
During the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, Hardik Pandya had a ligament tear in his right ankle while representing India. He landed awkwardly while blocking a shot during the match against Bangladesh, which resulted in the injury.
At first, it was a secret how serious the injury was. But tests later results came out that it was a Grade 2 rupture. That means he would miss the rest of the World Cup. Prasidh Krishna, a fast bowler, took his position in the squad.
During his recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore, Pandya was expected to miss four to six weeks of action. But his recovery took longer than expected. So he could not play in the T20I series against South Africa and Australia.
Before being released in the 2022 edition. The Indian all-rounder spent seven seasons playing for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Following his arrival, Pandya guided the Gujarat Titans to their first IPL title and to the 2023 season’s final game, which Gujarat lost to the Chennai Super Kings.
However, Hardik’s ankle injury prevented him from playing in any of the T20I or ODI series in the just-finished white-ball phase of the ongoing India vs. South Africa trip. He was also absent from the home T20I series against Australia.
3 Players who can replace Hardik Pandya as MI Captain for IPL 2024
The Mumbai Indians may have to name a new captain for the IPL 2024 if Hardik Pandya bows out of the IPL 2024. Here are the three possible captain options for Mumbai Indians leading up to the IPL 2024.
1. Rohit Sharma
If Hardik does not make it to the IPL 2024 season, Mumbai Indians may choose to go with Rohit Sharma as captain for an additional season. Many said Rohit should have been given the freedom to make his own decisions and that his dismissal was unjust and unwarranted. But MI had to make the difficult decision with the future in mind.
Having won five titles, Rohit is among the most successful captains in IPL history. He was MI’s captain in 2013. During the next 11 seasons, he guided the team to five titles. If Hardik still remains unfit, it is unclear if Rohit will accept MI’s offer to lead the team.
2. Suryakumar Yadav
Recently, under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India won a T20I Series at home against Australia. They then drew 1-1 in a three-match T20I series at home against South Africa. One of the MI team’s oldest players, Suryakumar has the knowledge needed to guide the five-time winners in the IPL. Should Hardik not recover in time for the 2024 season, he may take over as captain.
3. Jasprit Bumrah
If Hardik cannot make it back in time for the next season, Jasprit Bumrah is another formidable candidate to take the helm of the Mumbai Indians. One of the team’s most veteran players. Bumrah made his IPL debut for MI in 2013 and has been a major contributor to their success.
Also, the fast bowler has been a captain for India in limited overs and Test matches. Though Bumrah was not Rohit’s first option for the position. It is still unknown if he will accept an offer to head MI.
1. Will Hardik play IPL 2024?
Due to an ankle injury, Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who was just about to lead the Mumbai Indians, is probably going to miss the next Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
2. Why was Hardik Pandya ruled out of IPL 2024?
Hardik Pandya might be out of IPL 2024 due to an ankle injury while fielding off his bowling during a Cricket World Cup game against Bangladesh.
3. Will Rohit Sharma play for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024?
Rohit Sharma will be a part of Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2024. However, he will not be captaining the side this time as Hardik Pandya has been appointed as the new captain of the Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season.
