MS Dhoni’s IPL 2027 Future: What Will Decide His Return?

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni has revealed that he will decide on his IPL 2027 future before December 2026. The 44-year-old wicketkeeper-batter is keen to test himself out of the season before he decides to play again. He made his remarks during a health event in Bengaluru, where he stated that conducting medical tests would give him an idea about his body’s capacity to sustain another IPL season.

Unfortunately, Dhoni’s calf issues forced him to miss all of IPL 2026. He is a key player for CSK, and they are without one of their most experienced players; they will see whether he comes back for the next edition.

MS Dhoni Says Medical Tests Will Decide His IPL Future

Dhoni addressed the question of his IPL future during a healthcare event in Bengaluru. Rather than confirming his return or announcing his retirement, he made it clear that he first needs to know how well his body can cope with another season.

“Doc, I will have to go through the test. You will have to give me the report, and then before December, I will have to see, you know, how strong I am to maybe play one more season,” Dhoni said, as reported by ANI.

He also joked about leaving the responsibility to the doctors. Referring to himself as an “old vintage vehicle”, Dhoni said the medical team would need to make sure he was fit enough to keep going.

His remarks leave the door open for an IPL 2027 return. However, they do not confirm that he will play. The final decision will depend on his medical reports and how he feels after assessing his physical condition.

Why Dhoni Missed IPL 2026

Dhoni’s fitness became a major concern before the 2026 season. Calf problems kept him out of the tournament, meaning he could not take the field for CSK in any match.

His absence was significant because he has played an important role for the franchise for many years. Even after handing over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhoni remained an experienced presence in the dressing room and a familiar face for CSK supporters.

His role as a batter had also changed in recent seasons. He often came in during the closing overs, when the team needed quick runs. His power hitting and experience made him useful in that position, although his time at the crease was more limited than earlier in his career.

At 44, Dhoni must weigh the demands of professional cricket against his physical condition. Another IPL season would require him to manage his fitness throughout a demanding tournament. That is why his medical assessment will be important before he makes a final call.

What Has CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan Said?

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has given a clear indication that the decision of Dhoni’s future will be in his hands. The franchise doesn’t need him to continue playing, but will welcome him back if he’s fit to do so.

Viswanathan had earlier stated that whenever he comes to Chennai, he has to let the management know about his decision. He also wished that the old boy would keep playing for the team.

This way, Dhoni will have the option to take a call on his health instead of the fans and would not be pressured by the demands of the franchise.

His fitness will also be a key factor for CSK in his squad for IPL 2027. The management will require clarity as far as his status is concerned when they consider retaining his services in the team, considering its balance and what each player would be needed for in the upcoming season.

But the franchise has yet to make any final call regarding Dhoni’s future as a player. His involvement is still up in the air until he is able to confirm his plans.

Will MS Dhoni Play in IPL 2027?

Dhoni has yet to confirm his presence in IPL 2027 or officially announce his retirement from the tournament. His latest comments suggest that he is considering another season, but he wants to make the decision after reviewing his medical reports.

Both Dhoni and CSK have a significant task ahead of them in the coming weeks. If he’s still fit enough to go, he could find himself in yellow once again. If he decides the tests indicate otherwise, he may opt not to play this season. At present, there’s no known explanation. Dhoni has chalked out his own schedule, which is likely to be decided before December. It will be up to him to make the final decision for CSK and its fans.
