Most Five-Wicket Hauls By Indian Bowlers In Test Cricket

In Sunday’s fourth Test match between India vs England in Ranchi, leg-spinner Anil Kumble and R. Ashwin tied for the most five-wicket hauls by an Indian bowler in Test history. 

One big factor has been the long tradition of Indian cricket in producing great batsmen over various eras. However, several Indian bowlers have put themselves as leaders and left their marks on history. Indian bowlers have a great record in test cricket. 

History of Indian bowlers with five-wicket hauls in Test Cricket

In June 1932, during India’s maiden Test match against England, Mohammad Nissar became the first Indian player to take five wickets for 93 runs. The next person to accomplish this feat was the leg spinner Vaman Kumar. During Pakistan’s 1960–61 tour of India, he grabbed five wickets for 64 runs, nearly bringing India to victory against the latter.

Syed Abid Ali grabbed six wickets for fifty-five runs in December 1967 while playing Australia. The stats are still the best for a debuting Indian fast bowler. The greatest bowling numbers by an Indian on Test debut were taken by Narendra Hirwani in January 1988, when he took 8 wickets for 61 runs against the West Indies. 

His tally of 16 wickets for 136 runs in the match is a record for any bowler on debut. He is the only cricketer from India to take ten or more wickets in his debut Test match as of February 2021.

During his era, Chandrasekhar was one of India’s greatest match winners. India’s global wins were very uncommon. But Chandrasekhar gave the country hope that it was possible. 

With an amazing 42 wickets in just five victories away from home. Between 1964 and 1979, he was an Indian player who appeared in 58 test matches and took 242 wickets at an average of 8/79. In his career, he took two ten-wicket match hauls and 14 fifers. 

4. Kapil Dev – 23 five-wicket hauls

Without Kapil Dev’s contribution, Indian cricket history is incomplete. He was the most popular Indian cricket player of the time. Whether it was his 175* against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup or taking India to win, he was a great player. 

The only cricket player in history to score more than 5000 runs and 400+ wickets in test matches is Kapil. In 131 tests, he took 434 wickets with 23 fifers, and eight 100s with the bat, and played 131 games.

3. Harbhajan Singh – 25 five-wicket hauls

For more than ten years, across all formats, former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was India’s go-to spinner. He retired with two World Cup titles and more than 700 wickets. 

His career was turned around in 2001 when he became the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick against Australia in test cricket. In 103 tests, Bhajji took 417 wickets, including 25 five-wicket innings and five ten-wicket match totals.

2. Anil Kumble – 35 five-wicket hauls

After beginning his cricket career as a batsman, Anil Kumble evolved into one of the best bowlers in Indian history. As the second-fastest bowler in test cricket history to attain the milestone of 600 wickets, Kumble is one of the game’s most legendary players of all time.

Kumble did well at all places with little turn. With a top bowling figure of 10/74 in an innings, he played 132 tests and took 619 wickets. Kumble also took 8 ten-wicket hauls and 35 fifers. 

1. Ravi Ashwin – 35 five-wicket hauls

In test cricket, Ravichandran Ashwin is a modern-day legend. The veteran spinner from India has played a huge role in India’s success and domination at home. In terms of test wicket totals, he is the fastest Indian to reach 300, 400, and 500. 

With a BBI of 7/59, Ashwin has taken 507 wickets in 99 Tests played thus far. He has taken 8 ten-wicket hauls along with 35 fifers. Not to mention, when playing test cricket, he is a useful batter.
