Here’s what happened during the IPL 2024 auction held in Dubai, UAE.
IPL Auction 2024: A Record-Breaking Day
Aussie World Cup winners in particular have secured huge IPL deals after breaking the record for the most expensive purchase in auction history. With an incredible $4.43 million (24.75 crore) payout. Mitchell Starc beat his Australian teammate Pat Cummins’ record in the IPL 2024 auction.
After six years of making a winning bid for Mitchell Starc. The Kolkata Knight Riders finally got their man when they beat Gujarat Titans in the bidding war. After the bids for Mitchell Starc surpassed the INR 10 crore mark. Both the Mumbai Indians and Ricky Ponting’s Delhi Capitals withdrew from the IPL 2024 bidding war.
Just one hour before, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Mumbai Indians, and Chennai Super Kings in a four-way match to buy Australian captain Pat Cummins for A$3.67 million (20.5 crore). It set a new record for the largest-ever buy.
After the Punjab Kings spent INR 18.5 crore for the English all-rounder Sam Curran in the previous year’s auction. Pat Cummins became the most expensive IPL player ever at that price, surpassing Curran.
The 30-year-old Cummins will now play with his teammate and World Cup final hero Travis Head at the Sunrisers in the IPL 2024. Both of them will play under the Aussie assistant coach Daniel Vettori.
The signing of Travis Head, Australia’s 2023 World Cup hero, by Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH) for INR 6.80 crores was another huge development in the Set 1 of IPL auction. The Australian left-hander was also being pursued by the Chennai Super Kings.
However, they backed off once the bidding reached INR 6 crore and finally withdrew, allowing SRH to acquire Head. CSK probably decided to withdraw early in the bidding process. It is because they already had an overseas opener in Devon Conway of New Zealand.
IPL Auction: Other Big-Money Players To Watch Out For
From the group of international batters, Rovman Powell was the first to be put up for the IPL 2024 auction. The Sanju Samson-led team acquired the West Indies hitter for 7.40 crore following a fierce bidding battle between the Rajasthan Royals and KKR.
Rachin Ravindra from New Zealand is the first player the Chennai Super Kings acquired for 1.80 crore rupees. Loud applause greeted Shardul Thakur’s return to Chepauk as well.
England batter Harry Brook will play for the Delhi Capitals for a sum of Rs. 4 crore in the IPL auction. With a strike rate above 150 in Twenty20 cricket, Brook is popular for his explosive batting. With a strike of 145.08, Brook has scored 531 runs for the Three Lions in 21 innings.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) recruited Brook for Rs 13.25 crore last year. But following a dismal season, Brook was let go. The 24-year-old Brook had a great debut in the world of cricket. Taking home the T20 World Cup in November 2022 and starring appearances in Test matches.
However, he had trouble during the October and November 50-over World Cup, averaging 28.16 as England exited the group stage. The right-handed batsman made headlines recently when he helped England win a tough chase against the West Indies by scoring 31 runs off 7 balls.
It’s worthy to note that the Rajasthan Royals used nearly half of their INR 14.5 crores in pre-auction funding to buy Rovman Powell. Powell has shown his explosive ability in the league while playing for the Delhi Capitals, so the transfer is not shocking.
Powell smashed 250 runs in 14 matches in the 2022 season, scoring at a strike rate of nearly 150 (149.70). Mitchell Marsh of Australia joined the Capitals this season, and he lost his spot in the starting lineup.
