Former Indian Captain Kapil Dev has spoken plainly about Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket, saying the call came too early. The 1983 World Cup-winning captain said he was disappointed with the decision and felt Kohli still could serve India in the longest format. He also hinted that the move may have come from anger, not calm thought.
Kapil’s view has added fresh life to a debate that has followed Kohli since he stepped away from Test cricket in May 2025. Many fans saw the retirement as sudden, and Kapil’s comments reflect that same feeling. For him, Kohli was still good enough to carry on and did not need to shut the door so soon.
Kapil’s honest reaction
Speaking on Sports Tak, Kapil said he was not happy when Kohli retired from Tests. He felt the batter should not have made such a big decision in the heat of the moment. In his view, anger can push even the best players into choices they may later question.
Kapil said Kohli could have taken some time away, cleared his head, and then decided what was best. He believed that if Kohli had stepped back for a while, he could have returned stronger and kept playing for India in Tests. Kapil also made it clear that he was not talking about records alone. His point was that Kohli still had the game to compete at the top level.
That is what makes Kapil’s remarks stand out. He was not dismissing Kohli’s retirement as wrong in every sense. He was simply saying the timing did not feel right to him. In his eyes, a player of Kohli’s quality should not have left red-ball cricket while he still had so much left to give.
Why anger mattered to him
Kapil’s strongest point was about anger. He felt Kohli may have been carried away by emotion when he made the call. According to him, a player’s career should not be shaped by a sudden burst of feeling, especially when that player has already done so much for the country.
He also said Kohli could have followed a different path if he wanted a break. Kapil pointed out that great players in the past have stepped away for a while, played domestic cricket again, and fought their way back into the national side. He seemed to believe Kohli had enough class and experience to do the same if needed.
This was not a criticism of Kohli’s skill. Kapil was full of respect for that. His concern was about the decision itself and the mood behind it. He felt Kohli’s fighting nature, which has helped him so often, may also have played a part in ending his Test career sooner than it should have ended.
Aggression and control
Kapil also spoke about Kohli’s aggressive nature. He said that aggression is one of the things that make Kohli special. It has helped him stay sharp, stay hungry, and perform with an edge in pressure situations. But Kapil also warned that the same fire can sometimes blur judgment.
That point felt important because Kohli’s career has always been built on intensity. He has never been the type to hide his emotions. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and that has made him one of the most followed cricketers in the world. Kapil’s remarks showed that he understands that side of Kohli well. At the same time, he felt that when a player reaches a major crossroads, calm thinking matters more than emotion.
Kapil even drew a comparison with John McEnroe, the tennis star known for his fierce on-court behavior. The idea was simple: some great athletes do their best work when they are fired up, but that same fire can become a problem when they need to make a long-term choice.

Kohli’s Test exit
Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket in May 2025, ending a long and successful career in the format. His exit was one of the most talked-about moments in Indian cricket that year. Even now, it still comes up because Kohli was not seen as finished by many fans and observers.
Reports around Kapil’s comments also noted that Kohli had not yet reached 10,000 Test runs at the time of retirement. Still, Kapil did not frame the issue around numbers. He focused on what Kohli could still do, not on what he had already done. That is why his comments have struck a chord with many people who felt the same way.
For Kapil, a cricketer should leave when the time feels right, not when emotion takes over. That is the heart of his message. He respected Kohli’s career, praised his ability, and still said the retirement came too soon.
