Greg Barclay, an incumbent ICC chairman will not extend his tenure. Now the question arises is – Can Jay Shah swing it for the ICC? He has done a tremendous job in his 5-year tenure as BCCI secretary. Now, a few challenges will be ahead of him when he takes the role of ICC chairman.

Today, we will talk about the challenges Jay Shah might face as an ICC chairman, and whether can he swing it for the ICC (International Cricket Council). We will also see some of his achievements and good decisions as BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) secretary. So let’s dive into it quickly.

Jay Shah became the youngest ICC Chairman

Jay Shah, at the age of 35, became the youngest ICC Chairman. He is the 5th Indian to lead the ICC. Besides Shah, 4 other Indians to lead the ICC were Jagmohan Dalmiya, Shashank Manohar, Sharad Pawar, and N Srinivasan.

But, Shah became the ICC Chair unopposed. The other 4 Indians have to rely on the votes of the Asian bloc or even votes from Associate members. Shah has earned the trust of 15 out of 16 ICC directors. One of the main reasons would be Shah’s exceptional work as BCCI secretary.

Now, he will face some challenges when he takes the ICC Chair role. Let’s see some of the challenges he will face soon.

Challenges Jay Shah will face as ICC Chairman

➣ Holding a Champions Trophy 2025

As we all know, the hosting rights of an ICC Champions Trophy 2025 are with PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board). The PCB has also proposed a draft schedule to the ICC for the tournament. But, the draft schedule consists of all the games, including the Indian team matches.

The Indian government is reluctant to allow the BCCI to send Team India to Pakistan for CT 2025. In that case, Pakistan has to go for either shifting the tournament to another country or to go for a hybrid model, just like an Asia Cup 2023.

There was so much noise from Pakistan that the tournament would be held in Pakistan. Jay Shah will have to look into the matter and he can’t be thinking as BCCI secretary or as an Indian now. He will have to look into it as an ICC Chairperson.

Although it is expected that the decision on the CT 2025 venue will come already before Shah takes over as ICC Chair, it will be a challenge for him to organize the tournament smoothly.
