Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will commence on May 16, and Gujarat Titans(GT) have announced they are in training, which makes them the first to do so among others facing uncertainties.
This article outlines the in-depth view of IPL 2025’s suspension, current activities during the pause, the position of the BCCI, and some of the latest developments about the upcoming season.
Why Was IPL 2025 Paused?
The Indian Premier League 2025 break on May 9 was after Match No. 58, which was caused by increased military wars between India and Pakistan. After a terrorist attack was perpetrated in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, tensions rose. After discussions with important stakeholders, such as the franchises, the broadcasters, and the sponsors, the BCCI announced that the IPL would not occur for the next at least a week. The decision centered on protecting the players and relieving collective anxieties, particularly when the security risks grew, and overseas players risked getting caught up in travel issues.
The IPL Governing Council was quite clear that they stood with the nation and the armed forces, and they announced that suspending IPL was a responsible decision for all concerned.
What Are Franchises and Players Doing During the Pause?
With the suspension order in place, most domestic players returned to their home countries, while many of the overseas players also made arrangements to exit India to settle on safety and travel matters. However, the organizations concerned continued in touch with their players, managing actual points and keeping players informed and in high spirits as things developed.
Specifically, the Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, made the first move in terms of preparations. Citing official guidance, most organizations bowed to the efforts, but the Gujarat Titans began a net practice three hours in the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad. The participation of players such as Kagiso Rabada and Sherfane Rutherford at the training reiterated the determination of the Gujarat Titans to re-engage sharply once the competition resumes. An overwhelming majority of the Gujarat Titans side, with only a few overseas players away, decided to stay in India, showing dedication and confidence in the IPL’s successful resumption.
Punjab Kings’ coaching team, consisting of Ricky Ponting, Brad Haddin, and James Hopes, decided to stay in India after previous hints of a mass exodus. To ensure safety and comfort across the uncertainties, the BCCI orchestrated special transport for selected franchises to operate.
IPL 2025: What Has Happened So Far?
Before the break, IPL 2025 was under full swing, with 58 matches played on board. The Gujarat Titans topped the standings with 16 points after 11 games, with just one more win needed to get into the playoffs. Punjab Kings took the third position on the standings with 15 points collected from 11 matches, and only one win behind the leader.
The match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was sentimentally abandoned halfway in Dharamsala because of air raid alerts, and is expected to be declared a no-contest, with both teams sharing a point each. The key game between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals that took place in Dharamsala was seriously disrupted by air raid warnings and is likely to be a no-contest, with both teams receiving a single point.
After the pause, the IPL will continue with the Lucknow Super Giants playing against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and all future matches will be played, except those that are rescheduled for Dharamsala.
Why Was the Pause Necessary and What’s Next?
IPL 2025 was suspended for the immediate future to ensure the safety of players, staff, and spectators against heightened security concerns. It was a clear indication that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had elevated national security and the health of the cricket fraternity to a higher priority. In light of these developments, the IPL is in a position to bring forth an exciting and winning last lap.
The Gujarat Titans’ swift resumption of training indicates that they are committed and inspires other franchises’ preparations as IPL 2025 maps out its way home. The BCCI’s actions ensure a contoured, non-violent end to the season so that fans can also view an exciting ending.
