The IPL 2024 auction is not far away and the BCCI has announced November 26 as the last date to announce the retained and released players list before the mini-auction. Dubai will host the IPL 2024 auction on December 19 at Coca-Cola Arena. The auction has always played a crucial role in the franchise’s success and they have to make some calls to build a good team.
CSK and MI are the two most successful teams in IPL history
Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are two of the most successful teams in the tournament’s history. Both franchises have won the title five times each (most by any team). And for that, they have put a lot of effort in choosing the right players in the auction table. This time as well, in the IPL 2024 auction, they will look to get some good players in the team who will be required. We will see three players whom both, MI and CSK might target in this mini-auction.

(1) Daryl Mitchell
The Kiwi batting all-rounder has been one of the most consistent batters in world cricket right now. He has been consistent across all three formats for a while now.
Daryl Mitchell’s temperament is there to see as he has played a few outstanding innings for NZ in a couple of years. The most recent one is against India when he scored an outstanding century to help NZ put a good total on the board. Unfortunately, his team ended up on the losing side.
A match-winner for any team
Mitchell has been a match-winner for his team and has won games in all three formats. He is mature and has the ability to win games on his own on a given day. Also, he can give you some overs with the ball as well, if needed. It makes him a valuable asset to any team.
CSK might look for him in the IPL 2024 auction
Chennai Super Kings have one slot to fill, and that is of Ambati Rayudu. Daryl Mitchell can be a perfect replacement for Rayudu, who can play in the middle order. Mitchell can play sensibly and can hit the long ball in the end.
Also, CSK needs an all-rounder as Ben Stokes hasn’t played much for CSK in the last season due to injury. So Mitchell can fill that all-rounder slot that CSK is looking for in Ben Stokes.
What Mitchell can do for MI?
Mumbai Indians might go for Mitchell as he can play a huge role. Especially now K Pollard is not a part of the MI squad as a player, the Kiwi all-rounder can play that role along with Time David. The two big hitters (Mitchell and David) at the back end of the inning will make MI’s batting so strong.
(2) Spencer Johnson
The young Aussie pacer has just started to be seen in the international circuit. He has done well in T20 cricket/ franchise cricket and has been brought into the international side because of that.
Spencer Johnson is a left-arm fast bowler, who can bowl with good pace. And a left-arm pacer, who can bring the new ball back in with pace is always a lethal combination. Also, he can bowl in the death overs and if he puts his Yorker in the right area, he can be as lethal as M Starc.
CSK and MI need an out-and-out fast bowler
CSK might go for him as they only had one out-and-out pacer in M Pathirana for the death overs. On the other hand, MI always looks for overseas pacers in the team. Over the years, pacers like Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Johnson, M McClenaghan, J Behrendorff, Meredith, etc have played for the MI franchise. So MI might look for another pacer, especially looking at Jofra Archer’s regular problems with injury.
(3) Dunith Wellalage
The Sri Lankan spinner has been outstanding in all three departments in the Asia Cup 2023. He can be brought in as a utility player in the team who can bowl four overs, bat lower down the order, and be an outstanding fielder.
Mumbai Indians will look to bring in a quality spinner, which they lacked in the last few seasons. MI’s bowling attack is largely dependent on their pacers. Piyush Chawla has done well in the last season. But they will have to bring in another good spinner who can bowl in the middle overs. Two spinners can bowl well in tandem.
