Hardik Pandya To Become Next Captain Of India In T20 format?

It wasn’t just the ICC T20 World Cup final alone that happened on June 29. Both Rohit Sharma, the captain of Team India, and star player Virat Kohli had declared their retirement from the competition.

Rohit bowed out of T20Is after India beat South Africa by 7 runs in the final to win their second T20 WC trophy. The win also ended India’s ICC title drought which lasted 11 years.

Shortly afterwards, Ravindra Jadeja also announced his retirement from the T20 format. But what does it mean for Team India & BCCI now without a captain?

Hardik silences his critics in style

Pandya, the vice-captain in the tournament, bagged 3 crucial wickets in the final. After taking over for Rohit as the Mumbai Indians captain in IPL 2024, he also silenced his haters and the boos.

“He had a great World Cup which ended with a fantastic last over. It’s nice to see that he will be able to put all the criticism in the past and go on and take Team India forward.”.

As vice-captain, he has the capability to guide this format as captain. So he will now be planning for the 2026 WC to be in the best possible shape himself. But also forming a team of younger T20-oriented players. So they will hopefully win the WC back for Team India in 2026.” Parnjape told The Free Press Journal.

Reacting to Hardik Pandya’s all-round show in the World Cup and his chances to take over the captaincy from Rohit in the T20 format, Shah said. “We will announce the captaincy after consulting with the BCCI selectors, who will make the final decision.

While responding to the question on whether Hardik could be the next Team India captain. Shah indeed name dropped the all-rounder. But he added that it is left to the selectors’ final call. “We will declare the captain after conferring with the BCCI selectors, who will make the final decision.”

“New Captain will be picked soon by selectors”: Jay Shah

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah on Monday said that “seniors will be there” in next year’s Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship final if Team India qualifies for it. But whether Hardik Pandya takes over as the team’s Twenty20 captain from Rohit Sharma will be up to the selectors alone.

Shah was speaking to a select group of media. He praised the contribution from senior players in terms of this side’s T20 World Cup win. At the end where Rohit, senior batting star Virat Kohli, and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja announced retirement from the shortest format’s international assignments.

“With three greats retiring, there has already been a transition.” When asked what will happen to the squad after they retire, Shah said.

We will play there with a similar squad, as well as the seniors,” he said. In other words, fitness permitting, these seniors are likely to be around for the nine ODI matches India will play before February-March’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

Now, on Hardik Pandya’s all-round show in the World Cup and the chances of his taking over the reins of captaincy from Rohit in T20 format.

Hardik Pandya shines for Team India in T20 World Cup 2024

During the T20 World Cup 2024, India’s vice-captain Hardik Pandya excelled, contributing significantly to India’s victory. Despite going through a tough couple of months coming into this tournament. His resiliency and skills were there for all as he proves to be invaluable to the team.

Hardik Pandya’s hardest season was during the Indian Premier League. At every location where the Mumbai Indians played, he had encountered angry fans. He took over as the team’s captain for the season from the well-liked Rohit Sharma.

All this went bust in every sense as MI finished at the bottom and Pandya never got going as a player. One thing he proved was his fitness.

Hardik hit 144 runs and took 11 wickets in the showpiece. This includes going 3 for 20 in the final match. That helped Team India to victory against South Africa by a dramatic seven runs.

While Yuvraj Singh balanced it more at the 2011 World Cup. Hardik topped the requirements this time with big wickets and runs of value.

It was the result of the massive self-belief that comes with world-class skills. But in the IPL, the same guy was unable to hit the ball on ideal batting wickets.
