So many good players went under the hammer and we have seen some interesting buys in the Women’s IPL auction. One of the highlights in the Women’s IPL auction was Smriti Mandhana. She was bought by the franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for Rs. 3.4 crore. She becomes the most expensive buy of the Women’s IPL auction 2023.

There are other players as well who got the big amount across the 5 franchises. Some players went unsold as well. Today, we will tell you the reason why Delhi Capitals is the only team who can play five foreign players in their playing XI in WPL 2023 (Women’s Premier League 2023).

Despite having a sluggish start to the auction, Delhi Capitals assembled a solid squad. They recruited outstanding Indian players like Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Verma, who would be led by legendary Australian skipper Meg Lanning.

The inaugural auction of the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2023) took place at the Jio Convention Centre in Mumbai on Monday, making it a historic day for both women’s sports and Indian cricket (February 13). The five teams brought some of the top players in the globe thanks to the 87 players that were sold for a staggering Rs. 59.5 crores.

BCCI gave a rule about the playing XI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced in a statement well in advance of the auction day that each of the five teams in the 2023 Women’s Premier League (WPL) can feature up to five international players in their starting XI.

Since no other team signed anyone from the associate nation, they will not have the option to play five foreigners on the matchday in their playing XI.

Incidentally, Gujarat Giants were also interested in signing a player from an associate country and pursued Mahika Gaur from the UAE before realizing they had used up their six-player limit for players from abroad. As a result, they were unable to sign her and will not enjoy the same privilege as Delhi.

It’s noteworthy to note that only Delhi Capitals bought a player from the associate countries at the auction. American left-arm pacer Tara Norris was acquired by the team for INR 10 lakhs, and as a result, they are now free to field up to five foreign players in their starting Eleven, with Norris being required to be one of them.

In the later half of the auction, they signed players like Poonam Yadav, Radha Yadav, Jess Jonassen, Shikha Pandey, and Marizanne Kapp among many others to strengthen their squad ahead of the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League.
