For her crucial part in guiding the Indian Women’s Cricket team to its historic gold medal victory at the Asian Games 2023, Smriti Mandhana has seen a lot of praise. One passionate Chinese fan, though, stands out because she travelled an incredible 1200 km to see her performance.
Only a small number of individuals in Jun Yu’s native China are knowledgeable about and passionate about cricket, a sport that isn’t particularly famous there. By undertaking a unique trip to Hangzhou to see Smriti Mandhana, Jun Yu, a student from Beijing, China, defied the odds.
Smriti Mandhana Biggest Fan in China
Jun Yu, a teenage Chinese fan who travelled 1,200 kilometres from Beijing to Hangzhou to see his “Goddess” in action, was among the crowd of admirers.
The cutest @mandhana_smriti fan is supporting her as she and the squad easily defeated Sri Lanka today!
But Jun Yu, who enjoys the sound of wood striking leather, may be an uncommon species in the Mandarin-speaking world. He made the 1200-kilometer trip from Beijing to Hangzhou because of his love for cricket to see her “Goddess” in action.
It all started when he dove into YouTube’s gold mine of cricket footage and became an instant fan with the creativity of three of his favourite players: Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Pragyan Ojha.
During the World Cup 2019, I watched Jasprit Bumrah bowl against Australia. I back both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. They are currently among the all-time greats in the game.

How did he see cricket, then? “My Beijing university offers cricket lessons. So I have some knowledge of it, Yu said.
Yu offers some great knowledge of the cricket stadium for the Games, which was previously a flower garden.
There aren’t many cricket fields, players, or fans in China, and many don’t even know how it’s done. Only Guangzhou has a cricket stadium, where they play matches during the 2010 Asian Games. His views were great.
Yu was one of the diverse group of people who showed up at the Pingfeng cricket pitch on the campus of Zhejiang University of Technology. The stadium is not a legal cricket stadium.
I don’t play cricket, despite my desire to do so. Also, no proper ground exists. Before the Asian Games, this area of the field was a flowerbed. For the Asian Games, they made a cricket pitch here. Before the Asian Games, a few warm-up matches were played here, he said.
Yu likes Tendulkar, but his favourite cricketer is a New Zealander.
Kane Williamson is my favourite player, but Sachin Tendulkar is a legend of the game, said Yu, a master’s student in zoology at a university in Beijing.
But when the Asian Games begin on Wednesday, Yu won’t wait for the Indian men’s team to take part.
“From Beijing, I paid 1000 Yuan (INR 11,400) to get here. I have to study, thus I am unable to remain for the men’s games. On Tuesday, I’ll be flying back to Beijing,” he said.
Indian Women’s Cricket Team wins gold in Asian Games 2023
India Women beat Sri Lanka Women by 19 runs and won a historic gold medal in cricket thanks to a strong 116-run defence. Oshadi Ranasinghe gave Sri Lanka the best chance to win in their pursuit of their best period. But after her show, they were left with too much to do and could only score 97 for 8 in 20 overs.
Titas Sadhu gave the Indian women’s team a great start with the ball, taking three wickets in only two overs and finishing with great stats of 3/6 from four overs. Hasini Perera and Nilakshi de Silva’s 36-run partnership put Sri Lanka’s ladies in a great position.
Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s wicket of Perera provided India with a vital break. But the task was already done. Then, India held the screws in the final five overs, keeping calm to earn India’s first-ever gold medal in cricket.
India Women’s cricket team defeated Sri Lanka Women for the gold medal in cricket, scoring 116/7 despite yet another batting meltdown. In the final five overs, the team, who had reached 89/1, lost six wickets for just 27 runs.
Even though the pitch is not ideal for batting, IND W had to put up a larger total. On this pitch, it was tough to bat. But Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues showed great fortitude in the face of the Sri Lankan spinners.
