British Members of Parliament (MP) have called on England to pull out from their Champions Trophy 2025 (CT 2025) match against Afghanistan in protest of the Taliban’s mistreatment of women. On Monday, almost 160 members of Parliament signed a letter calling on England’s leaders and players to draw attention to the treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan. They wanted to send a clear message about not tolerating the behavior towards women in Afghanistan in the Taliban’s regime.
According to the media report, the letter said – “We also urge the ECB to consider a boycott of the upcoming match against Afghanistan in the ICC Champions Trophy Group stage on February 26 to send a clear signal that such grotesque abuses will not be tolerated.”
It points out the troubling situation developing in Afghanistan, described as an “insidious dystopia.” The statement was written by Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi and signed by members from different political parties in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, including Jeremy Corbyn and Nigel Farage.
A History of the Taliban Regime in Afghanistan
The Taliban rose to prominence in 1994 and seized control of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, in 1996. The takeover came after more than two decades of political unrest and turmoil.
A US-led military coalition removed the power of the Taliban. But, they retook control over Afghanistan after two decades; in 2021.

In response to the lawmakers’ letter, Richard Gould, the chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), demanded that all member countries take a consistent stance on Afghanistan’s involvement in international cricket.
Gould said – “The ECB strongly condemns the treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime.”
The ECB is already not playing any bilateral series with Afghanistan in protest. They have last played against Afghanistan in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 round-robin game. Afghanistan won that game by 69 runs. Australian Cricket Team also has the same stance and made it clear that they will not play any bilateral series with Afghanistan.
CA chairman Mike Baird also said that they were “very proud of the position they have taken.”
Gould added – “All member countries are required under the ICC Constitution to be dedicated to the advancement of women’s cricket. The ECB has stuck to its stance that no bilateral cricket matches against Afghanistan should be scheduled by this promise.” (quoted by us).

Gould added that a boycott may unintentionally encourage efforts to “suppress freedoms and isolate Afghan society”. The ECB recognizes the value of cricket for the displaced and those suffering in Afghanistan.
He also said the ECB will continue to contact the UK government, ICC, and other stakeholders for a ‘constructive dialogue’ in this matter. They will look to explore all the possibilities for meaningful change.
Afghanistan’s star players urge Taliban to reconsider its ban
Earlier, some of Afghanistan’s star cricketers like Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi asked the Taliban to free up the ban on women. They wanted access to medical education and training. They think that the country needs professionals in every field.
