Champions Trophy 2025: PCB Proposed Feb 19 To March 9

The PCB has proposed a February 19 starting date for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. As per the PCB’s decision, the tournament will take place between February 19 and March 9 in Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore.

Karachi will host three. It is also the venue for the opening match and a semi-final game. Seven games are scheduled for Lahore, which stages the final. Pindi Cricket Ground, the other semi-final venue, hosts four other games.

Champions Trophy 2025: All you need to know

The ICC Champions Trophy is set to return in its ninth edition. It is a cricket tournament for the eight top-ranked ODI men’s national teams, organised by the International Cricket Council. From February 2025 to March 2025, Pakistan will host the event.

Pakistan are the defending champions having won the last edition in 2017. Indeed, this event will be the revival of the Champions Trophy after an abrupt ending in 2017.

This will be the first major global event for which Pakistan is the sole host since the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka national cricket team.

It was the last major tournament to be held in the country was the 1996 Cricket World Cup, which it co-hosted with India and Sri Lanka.

As hosts, Pakistan qualified for the competition. They will play with seven other top-ranked teams from the 2023 Cricket World Cup group stage. For the first time, Sri Lanka, the reigning champions, were unable to qualify. This will be Afghanistan’s first participation in this event.

Champions Trophy 2025: Pakistan gears up for the marquee ICC event

This will be a major ICC event that will take place in Pakistan since 1996. Pakistan hosted the whole Asia Cup in 2008 and was also a part of the event last year. The BCCI has not yet confirmed if it will send the national team to Pakistan for the ICC event.

Several officials have been to Pakistan to assess the preparations to host the first ICC event since the 1996 World Cup. Security and event officials along with chief pitch inspector Andy Atkinson have been among them. The PCB has had positive signs from the ICC over its logistics and arrangements. It has allowed the PCB to go full steam ahead with its plans.

Ramadan will coincide with the final third of the competition, much like it did during the PSL knockout stage last year. Some of the knockout games in Karachi had very low turnout during Ramadan.

The PCB did try to manage that by moving start times to a later 9 pm. However, that won’t be feasible because the Champions Trophy is an ODI event. This means that a huge portion of the games will take place between sunrise and sunset when players who are observing Ramadan cannot eat or drink.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi claims there will be changes to the Pakistan team after their defeat in the T20 World Cup by six runs against India in New York.

Champions Trophy 2025: PCB puts Lahore as India’s top-level security base

Every match at the event featuring India will take place in Lahore. That means one semi-final will see a switch from Karachi or Rawalpindi to Lahore if India makes the last four. Hosting India in one venue is in talks. Since it sidesteps what could be huge logistical and security headaches around their movements.

Also, based in Lahore, which is near the Wagah border crossing between the two nations, it gives Indian fans an easier option to visit.

As usual, the primary concern in the lead-up to the event would be India’s involvement. Since the 2008 Asia Cup, the Indian squad has not played in Pakistan. Since Pakistan’s white-ball tour in 2012–2013, there hasn’t been a bilateral series between the two countries.

When the PCB hosted the Asia Cup last year, a hybrid arrangement was used, with the majority of India’s games being transferred to Sri Lanka and the final—which India won—taking place in Colombo. The BCCI has consistently stated that the Indian government chooses whether to tour Pakistan.

Every team except India in the Champions Trophy 2025 has toured Pakistan since the cricket-playing world restored ties with the country in 2015. Pakistan is also due to host an ODI tri-series with South Africa and New Zealand ahead of the event.
