BCCI To Delay Announcement Of IPL 2025 Retention Policy Rules Till The End Of September

The excitement around the Indian Premier League IPL retention policy and the upcoming mega auction for IPL 2025 is building immense anticipation among fans, franchises, and players alike. The retention policy plays a crucial role in shaping team strategies, as franchises are allowed to hold onto a core set of players who have performed consistently or who hold significant future potential. As far as the IPL 2025 retention policy, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is likely to delay the announcement till the end of September.

There are a few more points that the BCCI will discuss with the IPL governing council. Today, we will talk about the potential announcement date of the IPL 2025 retention policy, and the other points like the existence of impact player rule, mega auction, uncapped player rule, etc. So let’s dive into it quickly.

BCCI likely to delay announcement on the IPL 2025 player retention rule

The official announcement on the IPL 2025 retention policy is expected to be further delayed, adding to the suspense surrounding it ahead of the approaching big auction for the Indian Premier League’s next season.

Earlier, the media reports suggested that the announcement might happen by the end of August. Then, after a few days, another report suggested the announcement might be done in the middle of September, but that did not happen.

According to Cricbuzz’s recent report on the issue, the BCCI might announce the rules after the annual general meeting (AGM). The AGM will take place in Bengaluru on September 29.

According to the source, teams will have until November 15 to determine which players they want to keep, with a mega auction most likely to occur in December. The report also states that the Right To Match cards might return as well.

Different viewpoints on the number of players retention by the franchises

The BCCI had a meeting with the IPL franchise owner earlier this year. There were a few important points that were discussed in the meeting. One of the most important points is deciding the number of players to be allowed to the franchises before the IPL 2025 mega auction.

The BCCI has got different viewpoints on the IPL 2025 player retention. According to the reports, some franchises like Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), etc already have a core group performing, they want 8+ retentions in the team. On the other hand, some franchises want no retention with everything will start from scratch in the auction table.

The BCCI is considering those points, but still, they haven’t concluded yet. That is why they are delaying the IPL 2025 retention policy announcement.

Mega auction is here to stay

Another point in the meeting was the existence of a mega auction. Again, teams with the core group performing don’t want the mega auction. On the other hand, some teams want to continue the mega auction to build a new core group.

The BCCI is considering the mega auction for the growth and competitiveness of the tournament.

Divided opinion on the continuation of the impact player rule

Differing opinions were also expressed over continuing the “Impact Player” rule. From time to time, we have heard from lots of players that they are not in favor of the impact player rule. Players like Virat Kohli, Mohammad Siraj, Rohit Sharma, Axar Patel, etc were reluctant regarding the impact player rule.

One of the main in against of this rule is it allows more advantage to the batting team. Also, it won’t allow the all-rounders to have a go in the game as the player can be replaced at any time of the game. Let’s see what decision the BCCI will take on this. The broadcasters supported the continuation of this rule.

An uncapped player rule might also come back

The old rule on uncapped players might also be back. According to the reports, the CSK (Chennai Super Kings) franchise asks the BCCI in the meeting to bring the old rule back. Viswanath, the CEO of CSK, refuted the franchise’s assertions that they had made any such request.

The rule states that if a player has retired from international cricket for more than 5 years, a franchise can retain him as an uncapped player. If this rule comes back, CSK can retain MS Dhoni for a lesser amount before the IPL 2025  mega auction.

Conclusion

Teams have already begun to get preparations for the big auction. Rahul Dravid, a former India coach, takes on the role of head coach for the Rajasthan Royals. According to reports, the Royals and David have already started talking about the massive auction.

KKR will also look to fill the vacant spot of the support staff that has left. Let’s see how things panned out. No one knows how many players will the BCCI allow to the franchises for retention.\
