Bangladesh to Face Massive Financial Setback After T20 World Cup 2026 Boycott

Bangladesh’s men’s cricket team has now triggered a massive financial loss after boycotting the T20 World Cup 2026. With Scotland being announced as the official replacement, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is likely to face a loss of BDT 325 crore (approx. $27 million) from ICC’s annual revenue.

Having lost their lucrative sponsorships and broadcast deals, BCB’s yearly income could be affected by 60% or more. With this move, the Indians are unlikely to tour Bangladesh in August-September.

Impact of India’s Cancelled Tour on Bangladesh

Earlier, India’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh, which was scheduled for August 2025, was postponed this year. After BCB’s exit from the T20 World Cup, the men-in-blue would refrain from traveling to Bangladesh.

However, it is Bangladesh that would lose a hefty sum of money from the TV rights. Indeed, the series against India is 10x times the TV rights revenue than the ones played against other nations.

BCB’s Boycott Decision: Right or Wrong?

Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the T20 World Cup won’t be limited to just one international tournament. It could certainly damage the team’s reputation in global cricket rankings as well as affect the cricketer’s career.

While Pakistan cricket officials and former cricketers supported BCB’s move, a few backlash against such a bizarre move, just because Mustafizur Rahman, the Bangladeshi pacer, was released from the Indian Premier League (IPL), Bangladesh Cricket shouldn’t have risked their status by forfeiting their participation from the world’s prestigious tournament.

Not only the BCB, but also the Bangladeshi players now face a massive financial crisis that could negatively impact their long-term revenue.

Several key players will no longer have bat and kit sponsorship due to the strained relationship with India, further affecting their revenue than expected.

Massive Financial Crisis for Bangladesh Cricket

In addition to the brand deals and endorsements loss, Bangladesh is now trapped under a $2 million penalty for withdrawing from the tournament. This is because the ICC’s Member Participation Agreement states that no team can exit from a tournament without providing any valid justification to the global governing body.

Forfeiting from the group stages would cause Bangladesh to lose its participation fees between $300,000 and $500,000 ( 3.5 to 6.8 crore BDT approximate value).

Especially, the top-tier brands like Sareen Sports (SS) and Sanspareils Greenlands (SG), the big giants in India, are likely to terminate the existing contract with the Bangladeshi cricketers.

Considering the off-field sponsorship revenue, the high-profile Bangladeshi cricketers are certain to lose millions of revenue as they have no international tournaments or competitive teams to prove their talent.

This setback diminishes players’ salaries, weakens youth development schemes, destabilizes domestic-level tournaments, and delays future infrastructure projects.

Why ICC Might Take Severe Action Against BCB?

Bangladesh Cricket now enters the most dangerous era after boycotting its participation in the ICC’s key event.

Even after ICC officials guaranteed full security for Bangladeshi players in India, the BCB operated according to the government’s decision by denying the team’s travel to India.

Despite a 24-hour ultimatum, Bangladesh was still adamant about relocating its matches to Sri Lanka. Also, the ICC Board of Directors’ votes turned out to be in India’s favor with a  14-2 margin to host Bangladesh’s matches.

BCB’s request to shift its matches outside India has been rejected multiple times. This was because the independent security reports deemed the security levels in India as low to moderate. As a consequence, the board took a never-before decision, like boycotting the tournament.

Can Bangladesh Return to the T20 World Cup After Pakistan’s Withdrawal?

Despite the increasing speculations about Pakistan’s withdrawal from the tournament, Bangladesh holds slim chances of returning to the T20 World Cup.
A few reports claimed that Bangladesh could be provided with the opportunity to replace Pakistan in Group A. Even though this would fulfill BCB’s initial request to play all its matches in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh’s omission from the tournament will still be deemed an injustice.

With less than 10 days left for the 10th edition of the T20 World Cup to kickstart, the entire twist now depends upon Pakistan, the only nation that has turned out to be Bangladesh’s supporter so far.

Conclusion

BCB earns 4.46% of ICC’s yearly revenue as per the existing revenue sharing model proposed by ICC, valuing upto $26.7 million per year.

Even though the board’s finance committee confidently stated that the national team’s forfeiture wouldn’t take a direct hit, their long-term ICC financial agreements, that was secured till 2027 is certain to be affected.

With the increasing tensions, Bangladesh cricket now faces a challenge to balance its standards, financial stability, and player welfare.
