After Pakistan adopted a hybrid model, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has now refused to allow its players to travel to India for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
This decision comes amidst the increasing controversy of Mustafizur Rahman. The Bangladeshi pacer was released by his franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
Due to the killing of Hindus in Bangladesh, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not allowed Rahman to play in the nation.
Also, the BCB has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate Bangladesh’s matches to Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh Sports Adviser Against BCCI Decision to Release Mustafizur Rahman
Asif Nazrul, the adviser of the Bangladesh sports community, voiced his dismay against BCCI’s decision to release Mustafizur Rahman:
“Certainly! BCB is clear with its decision not to allow the Bangladesh men’s team to go to India for the T20 World Cup 2026,” the 59-year-old posted on his official Facebook page.
Nazrul questioned the BCCI’s decision to terminate a contracted player:
It was the responsibility of the Indian cricket board to inform that a Bangladeshi cricketer cannot play in India, although he was contracted in IPL 2026. So, the entire Bangladesh cricket team feels unsafe about playing in the World Cup.
I demand that the Cricket Control Board submit a written request about the entire matter to the ICC. Moreover, I have directed the board to ask for approval for Bangladesh’s World Cup matches to be hosted in Sri Lanka.
We welcome BCB’s decision after BCCI’s severe communal policy. The days of slavery are no more. Any insult to the Bangladesh cricket team, as well as the cricketers, will not be tolerated,” Asif said.
BCB’s Concerns About Players’ Safety
Two hours after Asif Nazrul’s statement, BCB voiced the concerns about Bangladesh players’ safety and security in India amidst the strained political relationship:
“Yes! After an in-depth evaluation of the ongoing situation and the increasing concerns about players’ safety and security, the Bangladesh national team will not travel to India for the tournament.
Taking the Bangladesh government’s advice into serious consideration, the Board of Directors has taken this decision.
Regarding this decision, BCB requests the ICC to relocate Bangladesh matches of the upcoming tournament outside India,” the BCB statement outlined.
This statement comes after the BCCI’s recent instruction to release Mustafizur Rahman, who was acquired by KKR for INR 9.20 crore in the IPL 2026 auction held last month.
BCB’s Request to Stop Broadcasting IPL Matches in Bangladesh
Asif Nazrul added yet another request to suspend broadcasting IPL matches in Bangladesh:
“Definitely! I have approached the broadcasting department and the advisor of information to halt the broadcast of IPL matches in Bangladesh. Such a level of humiliation to Bangladesh cricket, Bangladeshi cricketers, or the nation itself cannot be accepted under any conditions,” Nazrul added.
A Deeper Crisis of India vs Bangladesh Political Relationship
Dipu Chandra Das—a Hindu garment worker—was brutally beaten to death and set on fire after being tied to a tree due to his abusive remarks about Islam at a factory event. This led to violent protests in Bangladesh, causing the Hindus to suffer increasingly in the country.
Ever since the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled from the nation in 2024, the anti-Indian sentiment has continued to worsen.
New Complications After Relocating Bangladesh Fixtures
With one month left for the T20 World Cup 2026 to commence, BCB’s decision to refuse its players from traveling to India, citing security reasons, has thrown the schedule into some chaotic condition.
Suppose Bangladesh fixtures get relocated; there could be a new set of complications in the scheduling and logistical convenience.
Unlike the Champions Trophy 2025, the T20 World Cup 2026 wasn’t originally planned as a hybrid model. However, the ICC approving Bangladesh’s request could shift India-Pakistan negotiations into a three-nation conflict, complicating the biggest sporting events across South Asia.
Bangladesh’s 3 out of 4 matches in Group C fixtures of the tournament were scheduled in Kolkata, followed by a final league stage match in Mumbai.
| Date and Day | Opponent Team | Venue |
| February 07, 2026 (Saturday) | West Indies | Eden Gardens, Kolkata |
| February 09, 2026 (Monday) | Italy | |
| February 14, 2026 (Saturday) | England | |
| February 17, 2026 (Tuesday) | Nepal | Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai |
BCCI, as the tournament’s main host, has minimal to no role in influencing such decisions. However, it is unlikely for any change in fixtures within a limited timespan unless the ICC intervenes in this matter.
3 Possible Scenarios for Bangladesh Ahead of the T20 WC 2026
To be precise, Bangladesh is left with these three chances before the commencement of the T20 World Cup 2026:
- Forcefully play all the matches in India (Maximum Chances).
- All matches to be relocated to Sri Lanka, causing logistical inconvenience (Moderate chances).
- Being replaced by another team in the tournament (Unlikely scenario).

Final Verdict
In the previous year, the global governing body, led by Jay Shah, permitted Pakistan to play their matches at a neutral venue after India refused to travel to the nation in the Champions Trophy 2025. In a similar way, the BCB is keen to finalize a replica of this deal. As of now, practically nothing can be confirmed. Bangladesh is on the verge of becoming the second nation to avoid its matches in India. Finally, the matter is now in ICC chairman Jay Shah’s hands to decide the next course.
