The Indian Premier League (IPL) is popular for its exciting and fast T20 cricket matches, in which teams vie to score the most runs in the quota of overs. Some teams rose to the occasion in 2024, setting new IPL records and thrilling fans everywhere with their huge feats.

While teams like the Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad have transformed their top-order batting, others, like the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, have struggled mightily with the ball and are stuck at the bottom of the table.

IPL Records: Soaring Run Rates, Record Totals and Sixes Galore

This IPL season, batters have dominated bowlers more than ever. With 35 matches played and a season total of 9.49, the IPL 2024 average run rate is by far the best of any season! For comparison, the highest-scoring season in the past, was 2023, with a run-rate of 8.99. With a run average of 11.2 this season, SRH leads the group, followed by KKR with a run average of 10.6. 

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) overcame Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to record the highest team score in IPL history, scoring an incredible 287 for three. SRH’s 277 against the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders’ 272 against the Delhi Capitals are two more high scores from this season.

These outstanding batting displays highlight the players’ extraordinary talent and skill as well as the tactical moves teams made to increase their chances of scoring runs. As the season goes on, fans can expect more exciting moments and high-scoring games in the IPL.

  • The highest number of runs ever recorded in a T20 match in cricket history was a combined total of 523. It came from Sunrisers Hyderabad’s 277 and Mumbai Indians’ 246. 
  • It was Sunrisers Hyderabad who recorded the highest PowerPlay score in T20 cricket – 125/0.
  • Head matched the IPL 2024 record for the fastest fifty by scoring a fifty off of just 16 balls. Jake Fraser-McGurk of DC, however, broke it later on. He scored the fastest half-century of the season in just 15 balls. It is also the third-fastest fifty in the IPL records.
  • With a partnership of over 100 runs, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma’s run rate in the IPL was the highest at 20.68. In merely 38 balls, the pair scored 131 runs for the first wicket together.
  • SRH equalled its record for most sixes hit by a team in an inning in IPL – 22 sixes.
  • Washington Sundar conceded the second most runs in an over in IPL 2024- 30 wickets.
  • Following his unbeaten century during Tuesday’s (April 23) IPL 2024 match between the Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, Marcus Stoinis set a record for the highest individual score in an IPL run chase.
  • The SRH vs MI game in Hyderabad saw the record for the most sixes hit in an IPL game with 38 sixes.
  • The match between SRH and MI tied the IPL records for most boundaries in an IPL match.
  • In this season’s 35 matches, the team chasing has won 18 and lost 17.

What Are The Reasons For So Many 200+ Scores In IPL 2024?

Magical Bumrah continues to dominate

  • The difference in Bumrah’s stats this season between himself and his colleagues shows the pure brilliance of his genius. The other bowlers from MI had a combined average of 41.8 and an economy of 11. While Bumrah led the competition with an average of 12.8, a strike rate of 12.9, and an economy of 5.9.
  • Bumrah has had the most restricted bowling economy during powerplay and death overs (5.1 and 6.9).
